Marriage

Before the Jim Crow era, there was no such thing as a (state) “marriage license” in
America. Removing the need for a marriage license would cause the debate over
the definition of marriage to become obsolete. “Marriage” can only be defined by
individuals (and their religious institutions), not a government.
